Arizona police are still reportedly investigating a motive that led a 41-year-old ex-convict to carry out a shooting spree in a Phoenix suburb on Wednesday, killing one and injuring five.

The incident took place Wednesday morning with an altercation at the Tri City Inn in Mesa, when 41-year-old Ryan Giroux allegedly opened fire, leaving one man dead and two women wounded.

The suspect then reportedly led police on an hours-long manhunt, as he was allegedly involved in a car-jacking and a home invasion following the motel shooting. Giroux reportedly fled the scene of the motel shooting to a nearby restaurant, where he shot a local student and stole the vehicle of a driving instructor to flee.

Giroux then reportedly used the car to travel to two apartments, where more shooting occurred. Shortly after 2 p.m., police discovered Giroux hiding on the balcony of a vacant apartment and were able to subdue the suspect using a stun gun.

The 41-year-old suspect appeared in court Thursday with mild cuts to his face, which is covered in tattoos that include the words "White Power" and "88."

Mesa Police Detective Esteban Flores said during a press conference that authorities are still trying to determine Giroux's motive for shooting one man and two women in a hotel room at the Tri City Inn on Wednesday morning. Police believe the suspect's remaining crimes were related to robbery and his attempt to flee the first crime.

"We don't know exactly what he (Giroux) was doing there, but he was asking for something in particular. We don't know if it was drugs, money — those things will be worked out through the investigation," Flores said.
