Jim Parsons, one of the stars of the CBS sitcom "The Big Bang Theory," recently announced that he will be playing the role of God in an upcoming Broadway production.

Beginning May 5, Parsons, who plays the character of Sheldon Cooper on "The Big Bang Theory," will be playing the role of God in the upcoming Broadway production "An Act of God." The play has been created by David Javerbaum, a former head writer and executive producer of "The Daily Show With Jon Stewart."

The play is reportedly based on a book written by Javerbaum, "The Last Testament: A Memoir by God," that includes various musings on religion and humorous anecdotes.

According to Variety, Parsons, who has won multiple Emmy's for his role as Cooper on "The Big Bang Theory," will not be eligible to win a Tony for the 2014 season, as the cutoff date for play production is April 23. Parsons will be eligible for the 2015 to 2016 Tony awards' season.

The upcoming play will be directed by Joe Mantello, who has also directed Broadway hits including "Wicked" and "I'll Eat You Last."

According to People Magazine, a release for the upcoming Broadway show promises to "reveal the mysteries of the Bible and answer some of the greatest existential questions that plague mankind."

The theater performance will reportedly open as a limited engagement at Studio 54 in New York City on May 28.

A press agent, claiming to speak on behalf of God, told Reuters that "I chose Jim to play me because I relish the irony of telling the real story of the six days of creation through the star of 'The Big Bang Theory.' Plus, he's funny."
