Boyfriend Tried to Save American Hostage Kayla Mueller, Official Says
Reports from the death investigation of American hostage Kayla Mueller indicate the hostage's boyfriend reportedly tried to rescue her from Islamic State captivity.
Rep. Paul Gosar (R-Arizona) told CNN that he was notified that a man traveled to Syria to search for Mueller after she was kidnapped by the terrorist group in 2013. The man reportedly visited an Islamic State training camp asking to speak with Mueller because he was her husband, but was turned away.
There have recently been other reports of the numerous resources used by the U.S. government in an attempt to free Mueller.
"We devoted enormous resources, always devote enormous resources to freeing captives or hostages anywhere in the world," President Barack Obama told Buzzfeed News this week.
Mueller was also searched for during a U.S. Navy SEAL raid on an abandoned oil refinery near Raqqa where they believed Mueller was being held, only to find that the refinery may have been evacuated of hostages shortly before their visit.
The Islamic State confirmed with photographic proof that Mueller recently perished while being held in captivity in Syria. Although the terrorist group claims Mueller died during a Jordan-led airstrike, the White House and Mueller's family have yet to confirm how the 26-year-old aid worker perished.
"No matter how long it takes, the United States will find and bring to justice the terrorists who are responsible for Kayla's captivity and death," President Obama said of Mueller in a recent address.
