Christian group in Jamaica campaigning against Comprehensive Sexuality Education

Fundamentalist Christians in Jamaica are putting the blame on foreign influences for the perceived trend in "sexual anarchy."

According to Global Voices, the Love March Movement, a group that "is dedicated to protecting and restoring sexual purity and the family in Jamaica and the wider Caribbean," is pointing a finger at the United Nations and other international agencies for promoting sex education -- in particular, the Comprehensive Sexuality Education -- in the country.

The CSE, as defined by UNESCO, is "an age-appropriate, culturally relevant approach to teaching about sex and relationships by providing scientifically accurate, realistic, non-judgemental information."

The Love March Movement, led by radiologist Dr. Wayne West, who is also the chairman of the Jamaica Coalition for a Healthy Society, conducted a public forum on April 19 titled "Keep Us Free From Evil Powers: How International Agencies Are Sexualizing Our Children." There is also a petition to stop CSE in Jamaica. Moreover, West's group sent a letter to Education and Youth Minister Ruel Reid, a copy of which was shared on Twitter by Latoya Nugent, an LGBT activist.

It reads: "We, the below signed concerned citizens of Jamaica -- parents, guardians, educators, child and family counsellors and members of civil society, write to express our outrage at the continued attempts to indoctrinate Jamaica's children with harmful and illicit ideas on human sexuality.

"We are distressed that international agencies and local supporters are again imposing a curricula comprising Comprehensive Sexuality Education, on the most vulnerable population of our name -- our children."

West also previously accused U.S. President Barack Obama for allegedly trying to make homosexuality seem "normal."

However, not everyone shares the same view. The Caribbean Vulnerable Communities Coalition said in the tweet, "Research shows sex education can DELAY sexual initiation & INCREASE responsible sexual behaviours."

The Jamaica Youth Advocacy Network also tweeted: "Comprehensive Sexual Education (CSE) provides scientifically accurate, realistic, non-judgmental information."
