Christian singer and songwriter, Michael W. Smith, recently shared his personal story of fighting drug abuse during an appearance on The Church Boys podcast.

Smith recalled sitting with his friends when he was 10 and suddenly became a Christian. "It was like an epiphany. A light bulb went off. Jesus really is who he said he was," said the singer.

Although he was raised by a Christian family, he recalled a time where he clearly understood the gospel that is in Christ. At an early age, Smith began his music career, moving to Nashville at 17. However, Smith said the path was not easy for him and the journey took him away from his faith.

He said he entered into a 'crazy drug phase' over a four-year period. Smith also shared how he almost lost his life because of drugs.

"I lost my way," he said. "Still, to this day, I can't believe I did that for four years and got deceived and almost died a couple of times." However, God had other plans for the artist, who released his new album Hymns II: Shine on Us last month.

Smith told The Church Boys that it wasn't until 1979 that his life turned a corner. The Christian artist credited the change to his parent's prayers and steadfast faith in God.

"I felt like the God of the universe just came down and laid on the floor with me," he said. "I knew I was going to lose my life if something didn't change. I was stuck."

After the experience, Smith then recommitted his life to serving Jesus Christ. "I have not been the same since then", he said.
