Ebola Outbreak 2015 News: Survivor Nancy Writebol Decides to Go Back to Liberia Together With Husband
Ebola survivor Nancy Writebol, together with her husband David, has decided to go back to Liberia to resume their missionary work.
Nancy was infected with Ebola in Liberia in July last year while working as a missionary nurse, was flown to United States for treatment and survived the deadly disease.
"Liberia is still very much a part of our lives and our hearts," Nancy told NBC News.
Before flying to Liberia on Sunday, the couple went to Emory University Hospital in Atlanta to donate plasma in the hope that it could help in treating other Ebola patients.
"I am just very thankful to be able to do that and thrilled to be able to help others who may contract Ebola," she said.
Nancy said she wants to help others and scientists in their research about the disease. "I am very thankful to give back and to help others who may need that and also just for the furtherance of research," she said.
Dr. Anne Winkler of Emory is leading to test whether plasma can help Ebola patients recover. "The plan is that the bank would supply any plasma throughout the United States for any patient," Winkler said."They would become great donors if they had neutralizing antibodies."
Winkler said "part of the study is to actually characterize the antibody profiles in survivors of Ebola virus disease."
Nancy's husband said: "It's a privilege to be a part of that trial" and he is glad to serve others.
"The research is ramping up to test the effectiveness of the vaccine, and we don't know how all the results of that are going to be, but it's good to know that we can again continue to serve and be a help," he said.
He said they are excited to go back to Liberia to see their friends again.
Nancy and David joined Serving in Mission in 2013. David is the technical services manager while Nancy is the personnel coordinator.
