Fierce Winter Storm In Buffalo, N.Y. Leaves 5 Dead, More Snow to Come
At least five people have died in the ferocious winter storm currently pummeling the northeast and leaving over five feet of snow in some areas.
The storm dumped over five feet of snow in the Buffalo, New York area Wednesday due to a lake-effect snowstorm that caused massive snowfall coming off of Lake Erie. According to the Los Angeles Times, the Buffalo area received nearly 60 inches of snow in one day, about two-thirds of its usual annual allotment of snowfall.
Media outlets report cars being buried up to their roof in mountains of snow, and roads being closed due to the massive storm. Search crews have reported that five people have died from the storm and one woman was forced to give birth in a firehouse because she could not make it to the hospital.
Additionally, about 100 cars were reportedly trapped on Interstate 90 for several hours as snow continued to fall and effectively close the highway, with no word of when it would reopen.
"Mother Nature is showing us who's boss once again," Gov. Andrew Cuomo said in a statement regarding the surprising winter storm. "This snowfall may break all sorts of records, and that's saying something in western New York and in Buffalo."
"This is an historic event," the governor, who recently visited the city, added.
More snow is reportedly expected to fall Thursday, bringing an additional two to three feet of the already climbing five-foot pile-up.
Local media outlets have reported on the harrowing stories of local firefighters and rescue teams during their best to help stranded residents. One photo making its rounds on the internet shows nearly a dozen firefighters with the Buffalo Fire Department carrying a sick patient to the local Mercy Hospital in the fierce storm.
