Mel Gibson's passion project, "Hacksaw Ridge," has earned Golden Globe nominations for best director, best drama, and best actor for Andrew Garfield.

The film is based on the true story of Desmond Doss, a Seventh-day Adventist who refused to carry a weapon during World War II due to his religious convictions. Doss was awarded a congressional Medal of Honor for saving 75 men in the Battle of Okinawa.

Garfield, who portrayed Doss in the movie, dedicated his best actor nomination to the World War II hero.

"I'm very proud of 'Hacksaw Ridge' and I share this with Bill Mechanic, David Permut and Mel who led the charge on this project with great vision, humility, integrity and love," Garfield said, as reported by Los Angeles Times.

"I dedicate this nomination and my work to the incomparable Desmond Doss and all those who sacrifice themselves in the service of the protection and freedom of others. He is a profound symbol of healing and compassion for the times we are in," he added.

According to a report from Variety, Gibson will compete for the best director award against Damien Chazelle for "La La Land," Tom Ford for "Nocturnal Animals," Barry Jenkins for "Moonlight," and Kenneth Lonergan for "Manchester by the Sea."

The nominations came a decade after Gibson was arrested in 2006 for drunk driving. He was heard making anti-Semitic remarks to his arresting officer after the arrest report was leaked. Following his arrest, he publicly denounced his words and issued an apology.

The last time Gibson won the Golden Globe for best director was in 1996 for "Braveheart," which also won the Oscars for Best Picture and Best Director.

"Hacksaw Ridge" won big at the Critic's Choice Awards last Sunday. The film was awarded the top gong for Best Action Movie while Garfield received the award for Best Actor in an Action Movie, Daily Telegraph reported. It also picked up awards across five categories, including best direction.

The film drew $60 million at the U.S. box office after six weeks and another $23 million abroad.
