Iraq's Parliament Speaker Warns Country Must Form 'New Democracy' to Defeat Islamic State
A member of Iraq's parliament recently stated that a new democracy must be formed in the Middle Eastern country to combat extremist Muslim groups like the Islamic State.
Saleem al-Jubouri, the speaker of the Iraqi parliament, said in a speech this week at the Institute of Peace in Washington, D.C. that more must be done for the infrastructure of Iraq to ensure the Islamic State does not continue to grow.
"[…] those who have weapons are in a much more powerful situation than others," al Jabouri said in reference to those fighting the Islamic State.
"How can we create an equal situation? We know anybody who carries weapons has the ability to impose his will on others," al Jabouri continued, adding "So I call for the international community to focus on a project for stability after the liberation of the areas from Daesh [ISIS]. This project ... is to achieve stability and to build a new democracy within the minds of people."
At the recent G7 Summit in Germany, various leaders, including U.S. President Barack Obama, Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi and British Prime Minister David Cameron vowed to continue their fight against the Islamic State terror group.
President Obama repotedly assured Iraq's Haider al-Abadi that the U.S. will provide more training to Iraqi troops so they may better combat the Islamic State. Cameron also promised to deploy 125 British troops to help Iraqi intelligence in IED explosive device training.
