With the Jurassic World luxury resort left in shambles at the end of the 2015 blockbuster hit "Jurassic World," could the sequel then follow the story of some off-island dinosaurs?

While fans of the dino film franchise are eager to see what happens next, the ending of "Jurassic World" also left them somewhat perplexed. With the dinosaurs having taken over Jurassic World and the rest of Isla Nublar, it seems unlikely that the sequel could be set in the exact same place.

Luckily, "Jurassic World" director Colin Trevorrow has hinted that the sequel to the dino-revival could go beyond Isla Nublar. In an interview with Wired U.K. back in 2015, Trevorrow said that the upcoming sequel won't be "just a bunch of dinosaurs chasing people on an island."

According to the director, the film won't just be a monster movie either. Instead, it will delve deeper into the science behind making the dinosaurs.

"There are applications for this science that reach far beyond entertainment," Trevorrow explained. "When you look back at nuclear power and how that started, the first instinct was to weaponize it and later on we found it could be used for energy."

His statement calls to mind something Dr. Wu (B.D. Wong) said in "Jurassic World." In the film, the geneticist predicted that in the future, others will also be able to make dinosaurs.

"What if this went open source?" Trevorrow asked. "It's almost like InGen is Mac, but what if PC gets their hands on it? What if there are 15 different entities around the world who can make a dinosaur?"

While that sounds like an exciting story indeed, there is another, even wilder, plot which could make its way into the sequel.

According to MTV, the upcoming film could be based on an alternate script written by John Sayles for "Jurassic Park 4." A report from the website Ain't It Cool states that Steven Spielberg called this script the "mother of all ideas" and that it involves a team of militarized dinosaurs who take down drug rings in a bid to help make the world a better place.

The "Jurassic World" sequel will hit theaters on June 22, 2018.
