Majority Of Apple Tech Employees White, Asian, New Report Reveals
A new employment review released by Apple, Inc. indicates the Silicon Valley-based tech company employs primarily white and Asian males for its U.S. tech jobs.
As the Associated Press reports, the newly-released employment review states that 54 percent of the company's tech jobs in the U.S. are filled by whites, while another 24 percent are filled by Asians. Additionally, 80 percent of Apple's total global workforce is male. The company failed to provide statistics for its racial workforce make-up on a global scale.
Apple CEO Tim Cook released a statement addressing the lack of diversity at the company, saying : "Let me say up front: As CEO, I'm not satisfied with the numbers on this page," Cook wrote. "They're not new to us, and we've been working hard for quite some time to improve them."
"We are making progress, and we're committed to being as innovative in advancing diversity as we are in developing our products," the CEO added.
As the New York Times reports, Apple's diversity mirrors that of other tech companies. Other tech giants, including Google, Facebook and Twitter, have released similar diversity reports following pressure from the Rev. Jesse L. Jackson.
Still, Apple's current diversity report fairs better than many of its fellow tech companies. Facebook's recent diversity report reveals 57 percent of its American workers are Caucasian, while Google's amount to 61 percent and Twitter at 59 percent.
Jackson told the New York Times that Silicon Valley's tech companies must make an effort to be forward-thinking. "We think Silicon Valley is the fastest growing industry in America," he said. "We must be forward-thinking and inclusive in ways we have not been before."
