Marco Rubio's Biblical quotes on Twitter create uproar among political bloggers

Political bloggers have taken issue with U.S. Senator Marco Rubio after he shared two Bible verses on Twitter.

On Tuesday morning, Rubio tweeted a passage from the Gospel of John and followed it up with a verse from the Book of Proverbs.

"Peace I leave with you;my peace I give you.Not as the world gives do I give to you.Do not let your hearts be troubled or afraid," Rubio tweeted, quoting John 14:27.

"Commit to the Lord whatever you do & your plans will succeed. The Lord works out everything for his own ends," another post read, citing Proverbs 16:3-4.

While the senator often gets a wide range of responses to his posts, his two tweets citing the Bible generated a higher than average response from Twitter users.

Political blogger Charles P. Pierce described Rubio's posts as "oddly terrifying," while Leah McElrath, of the liberal activist group ShareBlue, found the tweets to be "unsettling."

Washington Post conservative writer Jennifer Rubin, who has been described as a "Never Trump" Republican, asserted that the Bible tweets meant that Rubio was either "hacked or he's totally lost it."

Rubio, who has been vocal about his faith, responded by tweeting, "Really? I triggered a @Twitter freakout by quoting the #Bible."

According to the website myPalmBeachPost, Rubio stated in his autobiography that he attends evangelical services on "most Saturday nights" and celebrates the Catholic Mass every Sunday morning. The website further noted that the John 14 passage was a part of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops' daily online readings for Tuesday.

Blasting News reported that the uproar over Rubio's posts continued throughout the afternoon, even after he attempted to explain his motivation for quoting the Bible.

In his subsequent tweets, the Florida senator revealed that he was offering his prayers to the family of Elizabeth Goldenberg, a University of Miami student who was killed in an Everglades boat crash the day after graduation.

The 22-year-old student was killed after she was ejected from an airboat on Saturday morning while celebrating her graduation with her family, who came to Florida from Hummelstown, Pennsylvania.

Goldenberg's parents escaped the crash uninjured, while her sister, Dana, was hospitalized with minor injuries.

Despite the negative reactions over his two Bible posts, Rubio went on to tweet two more verses on Wednesday morning.

"I am the vine, you are the branches. Whoever remains in me & I in him will bear much fruit, because without me you can do nothing," he tweeted.
