Michael Phelps Had Bloodshot Eyes, 'Mush Mouth' During DUI, Police Say
New reports of Olympic swimmer Michael Phelps' recent DUI arrest in Baltimore, Maryland indicate the athlete was slurring his words and suffering from "mush mouth" when he was pulled over by police.
A recent police report filed by the Baltimore Police Department indicates Phelps, the most decorated Olympian of all time, was pulled over in the early hours of Tuesday morning while driving through Baltimore's Fort McHenry tunnel.
Police said Phelps was crossing over double yellow lines on the highway and driving at high speeds. The report also says that Phelps' car smelled of alcohol and the athlete suffered from "mush mouth," or a slurring of his words, when police were asking him questions.
The report also said Phelps had bloodshot eyes, and when asked to stand on one leg for a field sobriety test, the Olympian replied: "that's not happening." Phelps also reportedly admitted to police that he had consumed three or four drinks earlier in the night at a nearby casino.
Phelps reportedly tested a .14 alcohol level, nearly double the state's legal driving limit of .8. He was booked at a local police station and released later that day.
The athlete addressed his second DUI arrest in a series of messages on Twitter, writing: "Earlier this morning, I was arrested and charged with DUI, excessive speeding and crossing double lane lines."
"I understand the severity of my actions and take full responsibility," Phelps said in a second tweet, adding "I know these words may not mean much right now but I am deeply sorry to everyone I have let down."
