A 25-year-old mom in Michigan has been charged with killing her own baby after giving birth in her office bathroom and placing the newborn in a plastic bag suffocating him.

Kimberly Pappas of Wyandotte was arraigned last Friday at the 17th District Court on charges of homicide-felony murder, first-degree premeditated homicide-murder and child abuse, according to Redford Township Police Department.

According to the police, Pappas gave birth in a restroom at her workplace at Ceva Logistics in Redford last March 31.

After she gave birth, she put the baby in a plastic bag and placed him in her drawer. The police and rescue units responded to scene.

Redford Police said Pappas attempted to conceal her pregnancy and the delivery of her baby. They were taken to a hospital where the child was pronounced dead.

Authorities later ruled that the baby died of suffocation.

Pappas told the police that she cut the baby's umbilical cord with cuticle scissors and then put the baby in a bag and returned to her desk, according to the Detroit Free Press.

The baby was in the bag between 15 to 30 minutes before authorities arrived.

Employees called the fire department after they discovered blood in the bathroom. Pappas reportedly told them she had a miscarriage.

After her court hearing, Pappas was remanded to the custody of the Wayne County Sheriff Department. Her next court hearing is on June 8.

The Redford Police Department said Michigan has the Safe Delivery of Newborns Law, which allows parents to surrender their newborn baby who are no more than 72 hours old to an employee who is inside and on duty at any hospital, fire department, police station or by calling 911.

"The parent has the choice to surrender the infant in a safe and legal manner without leaving any identifying information," the police said.
