Olympian Michael Phelps Charged With DUI In Maryland

 Olympic swimmer Michael Phelps was reportedly arrested in Baltimore, Maryland on early Tuesday morning and charged with a DUI after police report the athlete was swerving between lanes in his vehicle and driving with excessive speed.

Phelps, who is the most decorated Olympian of all time, was apprehended by police in the early hours of Tuesday morning while driving through the Fort McHenry tunnel on the city's I-95 highway.

"Mr. Phelps was identified as the driver by his driver's license and appeared to be under the influence. He was unable to perform satisfactorily a series of standard field sobriety tests. Mr. Phelps was cooperative throughout the process," the Maryland Transportation Authority said in a statement Tuesday.

The athlete was reportedly charged with driving under the influence and later released by Baltimore Police. The Olympian took to Twitter to acknowledge the incident, saying: "Earlier this morning, I was arrested and charged with DUI, excessive speeding and crossing double lane lines."

"I understand the severity of my actions and take full responsibility," Phelps said in a second tweet, adding "I know these words may not mean much right now but I am deeply sorry to everyone I have let down."

Although Phelps had originally announced his retirement from professional swimming after the 2012 Olympics, he said he would be coming out of retirement this past April, 2014.

The USA Swimming organization released a statement acknowledging Phelps misconduct, saying: "The news regarding Michael Phelps and his actions are disappointing and unquestionably serious. We expect our athletes to conduct themselves responsibly in and out of the pool."
