One Student Injured, Gunman In Custody In North Carolina School Shooting
One student has been shot and the gunman taken into custody during a shooting at a North Carolina high school on Tuesday morning.
The incident reportedly took place around 7:30 a.m. at Albemarle High School, located 40 miles east of Charlotte, North Carolina. The incident occurred before school began at 7:55 a.m., and involved suspected gunman Jalen Russell being involved in an altercation with another student, Bernard Miller.
The two reportedly exchanged words in the school's courtyard, and Russell reportedly used a gun to shoot Miller in the leg. An on-site school resource officer then ran out to the scene, where Russell reportedly gave up the gun and surrendered. Police were called to the scene and school was canceled before it began.
The status of Miller's health remains unknown, but the teenager was reportedly transferred to the local Stanley Regional Medical Center for care. Parents were being asked to go to the North Albemarle Baptist Church instead of the school if they need counseling or have questions.
"In this case we had the suspect immediately in custody," Albemarle Police Chief William Halliburton told local media outlet WCNC-TV.
"We had 20 officers there (at the school) within minutes," Halliburton continued, saying "We have recovered the gun […] It was placed on the ground."
"He could have done more so the reaction is that we're thankful that he gave himself up," the police chief concluded.
Police and staff at the school said they felt confident in dealing with Tuesday's incident after undergoing extensive summer training on how to deal with school shootings.
