'Orange Is the New Black' season 5 release date, latest news: Netflix renews show for three more seasons

"Orange Is the New Black" is set to return to Netflix this 2017 for its fifth season.

As reported by Den of Geek, series creator Jenji Kohan has committed renewal for "Orange Is the New Black" for three more seasons. Through a press release, Kohan expressed her gratitude to Netflix as well as her cast and crew.

"Three more years! Not quite a political term, but still plenty of time to do some interesting things. In some cultures, 'May you lead an interesting life,' is a curse, but I don't live in those cultures," Kohan said in her statement. She also went on to say: "And kudos and gratitude to the stellar cast and crew and writers and producers and editors and musicians and mixers and shleppers... with whom I have the pride and honor of crafting this show. Three more years! Three more years!"

In the past, Netflix has repeatedly claimed that "Orange Is the New Black" is its most-watched original series. Aside from viewership, the series also boasts the recognition that it has claimed for its first three seasons, which includes 12 Emmy nominations and three wins for its first season alone.

The series' cast has significantly grown over the years since it debuted. The plot branched out from the main character Piper (Taylor Schilling) to other colorful characters who are imprisoned in Litchfield Penitentiary.

Currently, aside from Schilling, the show stars Uzo Aduba, Laura Prepon, Kate Mulgrew, Laverne Cox, Danielle Brooks, Dascha Polanco, Selenis Leyva, Taryn Manning, Samira Wiley, Jackie Cruz, Yael Stone, Lea Delaria, Elizabeth Rodriguez, and Adrienne C. Moore.

Recently, news broke out that Manning would be leaving the show, but she soon took to Instagram to debunk this allegation. A Netflix spokesperson also told TV Guide that the report is simply "not true."

"Orange Is the New Black" season 5 still has no confirmed release date. Given that Netflix released the last three season of the show in June, the fifth season may be scheduled to launch at around the same time of the year.
