Myles Munroe, senior pastor of the Bahamas Faith Ministries International Fellowship and a renowned international figure and speaker, died in a fiery plane crash in the Bahamas on Sunday.

He was traveling in a private jet along with eight others. Among the dead were his wife Ruth Ann and daughter Charisa, the two pilots and several members of the Bahamas Faith Ministries International Fellowship, including its senior vice president Richard Pinder. They were heading to the 2014 Global Leadership Forum in the Bahamas city of Freeport when tragedy struck.

The Learjet 36 was attempting to land in bad weather at Grand Bahama International Airport when it struck a crane used to move shipping containers before crashing to the ground, the Department of Civil Aviation in the Bahamas said in a statement. It said the plane exploded on impact and that there were no survivors.

The statement noted that bad weather probably had a lot to do with the crash and that another plane flying the same route to Freeport had earlier aborted its landing and turned back. Despite the inclement weather, the plane carrying Munroe went ahead with the landing.

The Bahamas government has announced that an investigation is underway to determine the cause of the crash.

Despite the death of Munroe, the Bahamas Faith Ministries International Fellowship announced that the Global Leadership Forum would go ahead as planned but would be shortened.

Munroe, 60, was known throughout the world as a prominent pastor and eloquent motivational speaker. As part of his ministry, Monroe appeared along with Bishop T.D. Jakes in various events. He was also part of the Promise Keepers movement, which was formed in the early 2000's. He authored over 100 books, most of them becoming bestsellers in the Bahamas and other countries.

Many prominent people including Andrew Young, the former U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, extended their condolences to his family.
