Denver Broncos quarterback Peyton Manning has made waves for recent comments in which the NFL athlete said the legalization of marijuana in his home state has been good for business.

Manning told Sports Illustrated in a recent interview that the legalization of marijuana in his state has been good for business, especially the business of selling pizza. Manning owns 21 Papa John's franchises in the Denver area.

"There's some different laws out here in Colorado," Manning said. "Pizza business is pretty good out here, believe it or not, due to some recent law changes. So when you come to a different place, you've kind of got to learn everything that comes with it."

Manning has repeatedly starred in Papa John's commercials with the pizza company's owner, John Schnatter.

The NFL quarterback's joke comes at a serious time for the national football league, which is currently dealing with multiple scandals relating to domestic abuse among its players. Minnesota Vikings running back Adrian Peterson has been indicted on charges of injury to a child for allegedly whipping his four-year-old son with a switch, and running back Ray Rice was recently dropped by his team, the Baltimore Ravens, after a video surfaced showing him beating his wife in a hotel elevator.

Criticism has been focused on NFL commissioner Roger Goodell, with some even calling for him to resign from his position in the NFL for his handling of the Rice situation. Goodell claims he had not seen the Ray Rice surveillance video prior to its release two weeks ago.
