Thousands of police officers from all over the country gathered in New York City Saturday to attend the funeral of one of the New York Police Department Officers recently slain in an attack, with several officers turning their backs to NYC Mayor Bill DeBlasio as an act of defiance.

Thousands of police officers from as far as California and Canada gathered outside of the Christ Tabernacle Church in Queens to honor New York City Police Officer Rafael Ramos, who was shot to death along with his partner Wenjian Liu as the two sat in their squad car in Brooklyn two weekends ago.

The two police officers had been shot by suspect Ismaaiyl Brinsley allegedly as retribution for the recent deaths of Eric Gardner in Staten Island and Michael Brown in Ferguson, Missouri. New York City residents and police have been critical of the city's mayor, Bill DeBlasio, arguing that he has blatantly supported protesters and turned his back on the city's police force.

The tension was evident at Ramos' funeral Saturday, when officers watching the procession from outside the church turned their backs to the large screen when DeBlasio took the stage to speak in honor of the fallen police officers.

Blocks from the church, defiant police expressed their dissatisfaction with the city's mayor.

According to the Associated Press, retired police officer John Mangan held a sign that read: "God Bless the NYPD. Dump de Blasio."

"If the mayor really wanted to do the right thing, he would have gotten into an NYPD car and rode around Bed Stuy and see the difficult jobs these cops do every day," Mangan said.
