Popular Atheist Blogger Pulls Kickstarter Campaign for 'God Is An Abusive Boyfriend' Book
Hemant Mehta, the blogger behind the well-known "Friendly Atheist" blog, has canceled a Kickstarter campaign that sought to raise funds for a book entitled God Is An Abusive Boyfriend (and you should break up).
The book sought to parallel a relationship with God to a woman's relationship with an abusive boyfriend, asking questions such as "Are you always telling people how amazing He is while hiding His faults?"
"Do you ever get defensive when people criticize Him, even if they have a good point?" read another question from the book.
The book was meant to be presented in a similar way to a children's book, with artwork done by Tracey Moody.
Mehta announced on his "Friendly Atheist" blog on Thursday that he chose to nix the book fundraising project, saying he received much "negative feedback" for apparently making light of domestic abuse.
"After receiving a lot of negative feedback over the past 24 hours, I've decided to put a stop to the project. Even if I believe the concept behind the book is a valid one, the execution was poor and it upset a lot of good people. My apologies to anyone in that crowd," Mehta wrote on Thursday.
"To everyone who supported the project so far, I appreciate your understanding. I hope you'll support whatever I decide to do next."
When promoting the project on his blog earlier this week, Mehta wrote that the purpose of the book was to provide multiple "[reasons why] God's not the right partner for you."
"Let's initiate some breakups!" Mehta added enthusiastically.
