Secret Service Arrests Man Trying to Scale White House Fence
The Secret Service announced this week that it had arrested a man reportedly trying to climb a White House fence on Sunday afternoon.
Secret Service spokesman Brian Leary confirmed that a man was spotted trying to scale a temporary bike rack near fencing around the White House at about 2:15 p.m. EST Sunday afternoon. The name of the man has not been released and he's been places in the custody of D.C. police. The Secret Service has charged the suspect with unlawful entry.
The incident happened just over a week after a drone reportedly crashed on the lawn of the White House in the wee hours of the morning. The Secret Service determined that the drone had been driven recreationally by an intoxicated government employee near his apartment. The employee claimed to have crashed the small device on the White House lawn by accident.
"The individual has been interviewed by Secret Service agents and been fully cooperative. Initial indications are that this incident occurred as a result of recreational use of the device," a statement from the Secret Service said when the incident took place in late January.
The government security agency added that the drone was spotted when a member of the White House security team "heard and observed a 'quad copter' device, approximately two feet in diameter, flying at a very low altitude and ultimately crashing on the southeast side of the complex."
"There was an immediate alert and lockdown of the complex until the device was examined and cleared," the Secret Service added in a statement.
