Snapchat Discover Release News: Company Offers 'Discover' To Boost News Service Bid
Snapchat has vowed to leave behind it messy history of disappearing photos and videos and move forward into the future as a solid news provider.
The world's largest and most popular photo messaging application has tied up with a variety of media companies to offer a new service to its users, which it named "Discover."
Those who use the service will be able to get daily news articles and videos from various sources including CNN, People, Food Network, Yahoo News, Vice News and ESPN. However, the content will be available to the users for a longer period of time than the traditional Snapchat messages that disappear within a few seconds.
With the "Discover" service, users will get fresh content every 24 hours and will be able to view current and trending news, photos and videos. To access the service, they will have to first download the new version of Snapchat for iOS or Android devices and then tap on the circular button at the top to get into the "Discover" screen. Once there, users will be presented with several icons, each of which will represent a channel such as Yahoo News, Cosmopolitan or Daily Mail.
Upon selecting a channel, users can then swipe left or right to navigate through summaries of news stories created by editorial teams. If any of the summaries interest the users, they can then swipe upwards to open the article and read it in detail, see photos or check out videos. To go back to the main content provided by channel, users can simply swipe downwards on the screen.
CNET states that with the new service, Snapchat's users who tend to be mainly women will be able to view videos that range in length from a few seconds to over 15 minutes. It also added that Snapchat will most probably look to include advertising in the service and use it to increase its revenue.
