Taylor Swift in Porn Domain Purchases; Singer Takes Preemptive Measure Against Internet Trolls
Haters gonna hate, hate, hate but songstress and New York City Global Welcome Ambassador Taylor Swift has already put claims on .porn and .adult web suffixes paired with her name.
The non-profit Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers, or ICANN, has allowed a select list of people and firms to get the first pick before the new set of domain names are opened to the public this summer, a CNN report said.
ICANN decided in 2011 to create more generic top-level domains, also known as gTLDs, like .com and .net. From 22, there are now more than 547 new gTLDs, with new suffixes opened monthly, CNN said.
ICANN is now offering brands to get their hands on the new domains during the "Sunrise period" before anyone can puchase a .porn and .sucks website this June.
Swift reportedly bought over the weekend TaylorSwift.porn and TaylorSwift.adult, each with a price tag of $2,500, before they go public on June 1 as a preemptive measure before Internet trolls can buy them. The singer's representatives cannot be reached immediately for comment.
The singer is not the only one making steps to prevent being made fun of or being associated with anything negative online. Stuart Lawley, the chief executive officer of ICM Registry which manages the .porn and .adult top-level domains, Silicon Valley giant Microsoft already registered Office.porn and Office.adult.
"It's first to the buzzer [then]," Lawley was reported as saying.
ICANN said that its move to expand gTLDs will facilitate Internet users in getting to their intended website as domains become descriptive. Some of them are: .healthcare, .deals, and .amsterdam, help ensure Web users arrive at their intended destination.
Businesses will also get to have more unique addresses.
"At the end of the day, a TLD is really a brand," Steve Miholovich, senior vice president of marketing at Safenames, a domain registrar and advisory firm for web sites, was quoted by CNN as saying.
Firms may want to buy a negative or R-rated domain if they want to prevent it from being bought and used by someone else, the news network said.
Miholovich said that people may be uncomfortable with a .porn or .adult site linked to their names, but at least they know the website's content.
"To me it's very responsible," he said.
