2016 presidential hopeful Ted Cruz recently suggested that there is a "war on faith" in the United States while speaking at a rally in Iowa.

Cruz made his comments while speaking at the Iowa Events Center this past Friday, where he was accompanied by citizens who he argued have had their religious freedom violated, including some who had refused to provide services for same-sex marriage couples.

"There is a war on faith in America today, in our lifetime," Cruz said in his speech. "Did we ever imagine that in the land of the free and home of the brave, we would be witnessing our government persecute its citizens for their faith?"

The Texas senator went on to say that threats against religious freedoms have continued to grow.

"They have been growing for decades but never have the threats been greater to religious liberty than they are right here and now today," the 2016 presidential hopeful told the crowd.

"These threats are not imagined, they're not made up," he continued. "These are real people leading real lives who found themselves facing persecution simply for living out their faith. There is a war on faith in America today."

Cruz previously encouraged Americans to vote with their religious values in the upcoming election, saying in a recent interview with the American Family Association that "if we can simply bring Christians to the polls, is it any wonder that we have the government we have, we have the leaders we have, if believers stay home and leave electing our leaders to unbelievers? We get exactly what we deserve."

"Nothing is more important than having people of faith stand up and vote our biblical values," Cruz added.
