The re-birth of Justin Bieber: how the Christian pop superstar rediscovered his faith and purpose
A couple of years ago, Justin Bieber was making headlines for all the wrong reasons - urinating on an image of former U.S. president Bill Clinton, throwing eggs at a neighbor's house, and falling foul of the law for driving offenses. But now he's making headlines for a very different reason - his rekindled faith.
In a recent turn of events, Bieber is going through a spiritual faith revival, openly speaking about his faith in God. He's never actually stopped being a Christian but his behavior led many to feel that he had turned his back on it.
However, his faith - and his behavior - seem to be back on track again, and he's feeling increasingly confident to share it with the world.
He recently told Complex that he is at a point in his life where he's not going to hold back on his faith.
"We have the greatest healer of all and his name is Jesus Christ. And he really heals. This is it. It's time that we all share our voice. Whatever you believe. Share it. I'm at a point where I'm not going to hold this in."
Bieber added, "I'm not religious. I, personally, love Jesus and that was my salvation."
He relayed how he finds religion a little off-putting, particularly the concept of bringing offerings so that God will give blessings in return.
In his view, faith should be about having a personal relationship with Jesus, and doing things not because we 'have' to but because we 'want' to.
"It's not a 'have to.' It should be just like a personal relationship. Like, 'Hey, I love you because you first loved me,'" he said.
The 'Where Are You Now' singer recently admitted in an interview with Radio Times, that he was in a bad place, but also going through trial and error.
He hopes people will see past all of that: "I'm not a bad guy. People might have misconceptions. And hopefully those walls start to come down and they see the real me."
He even called his album Purpose because for a while, he felt he lost his purpose. But now, he has found his purpose and that he can use his stardom for good. "Because I do have a platform, and there's so much I can do for the world and use my music to bring that hope and light."
He also revealed that he prays "when I go to sleep. I pray during the day – when I have a problem or when I just wanna thank Him for all He's done for me. Without God I wouldn't be in this position."
"I feel like there's a reason I'm here," he added.
His positive spiritual journey can be credited to the mentoring and unwavering support he got from Hillsong Pastor Carl Lentz and The City Church Pastor Judah Smith. In fact, he was baptized by Lentz in 2015 - reportedly in a bath tub.
Since his baptism, he has regularly been spotted attending church services and studying the Bible in Los Angeles and New York. He has been very vocal about his spiritual journey, even sharing his revival on his social media networks with his millions of followers.
And to cap it all off he just received his very first Grammy award on the success of his comeback album 'Purpose'.
