Willie Nelson's Braids Sell For $37K At Auction
Country musician Willie Nelson reportedly sold his well-known braids this past weekend for $37,000 at a New York City-based auction.
Nelson, known for such country classics as "Blue Eyes Crying In The Rain" and "Always On My Mind," had given his well-known braids to fellow musician Waylon Jennings back in the 1980's as Jennings was making an effort to remain sober, following a cocaine addiction.
Jennings kept the braids, which were the iconic red of Nelson's hair before it grayed over the years. The braids were sold at the Guernsey's auction house in New York City along with other possessions of Jennings' collected over the years.
Also sold at the auction was Jennings' Ariel Cyclone motorcycle, previously owned by musician Buddy Holly and given to Jennings after his death. The motorcycle sold at the auction for $450,000.
Another item sold at the auction was a contract agreement between Jennings, Nelson, Johnny Cash and Kris Kristofferson when they agreed to make music together as the Highwaymen.
"Many items from fellow artists are brilliantly preserved in Jennings' collection, which stands as a timetable and testament to his calling in life. Unpublished photographs, favorite stage outfits, instruments, music awards and stage equipment are among the countless treasures to be sold," the auction house said on its website prior to this weekend's "Remembering Waylon" event.
Jennings, who passed away in 2002, was known for such hit songs as "Good Hearted Woman" and "Luckenbach Texas." Jennings often struggled with a cocaine addiction during his career but was supported by fellow musicians that included Cash and Nelson, among others.
