Zoe Kravitz Eating Disorder News: 'Food Became an Enemy in a Strange Way'
Actress Zoe Kravitz has revealed that she suffered from anorexia and bulimia when she was a teenager. She was a victim of these eating disorders during the period she was 13 to 17 years old, because she had a very negative self-image – she was frustrated with the way she looked.
She admitted: ''I was bulimic and anorexic in high school. I felt as though food had this power over me. Instead of looking at food the way you should, to be thankful that it nourishes your body, it becomes an enemy in some strange way, which is a really sad thing, and it's a lot about anger.''
Kravitz, 26, the only daughter of singer Lenny Kravitz and actress Lisa Bonet, confirmed the trouble started when she started comparing herself with models she saw on the magazines and in other media. She became angry she didn't look anything like the models and she started torturing herself.
When she got older, she managed to overcome her food issues. She decided to respect her body which is why she now eats well.
She told You magazine: ''I had some therapy, but to be honest that's not what helped me. I relapsed and relapsed. Then it got to the point where I had to make the decision for myself that I would stop. You have to want to be done. Now I work out and try to respect my body. I'm not skinny, I'm a foodie.''
Kravitz starred as Angel Salvadore in "X-Men: First Class," and co-starred with Shailene Woodley in "Divergent" as Christina. She was also in "After Earth" with Will Smith and Jaden Smith. This 2015, she will reprise her role as Christina in "Insurgent," the sequel to "Divergent." She will also be seen in "Mad Max: Fury Road," the first Mad Max movie to come out in a long, long time.
