2018 Subaru WRX and WRX STI release date, specs news: Sports sedan updated with improved performance and enhanced design
Subaru has debuted the 2018 WRX and WRX STI which will arrive in dealerships in the spring with enhancements in design, performance, comfort and safety.
For the new model year, the WRX sports sedan gains a redesigned front fascia that highlight a sportier and more aggressive look. It has a more pronounced grille and a larger lower grille opening. New exterior features include LED Steering Responsive Headlights, heated mirrors and roof rack mounting brackets.
The interiors have also been upgraded with a rear seat armrest with cup holders, redesigned door grips, thicker glass and revised door sealing to reduce unwanted noise. Likewise, the cabin is equipped with a new 5.9-inch multi-function display with the Subaru StarLink 7.0 infotainment system.
In terms of safety, Subaru has the EyeSight Driver Assist Technology with the EyeSight Assist Monitor that uses LED indicators to display alerts on the windshield and Vehicle Hold that can reduce driver fatigue by controlling the car while at traffic lights and seamlessly transitioning to acceleration.
The 2018 WRX is powered by a 2.0-liter direct-injected turbocharged BOXER engine that delivers 268 horsepower. The standard with a six-speed manual transmission comes with an enhanced shifter feel, new synchro design, reduced friction and smoother clutch take-up. However, prospective buyers can also upgrade to the Sport Lineartronic CVT transmission with manual mode.
The 2018 WRX also features improved steering stability and ride comfort thanks to new front and rear suspension tuning. Electric power steering was likewise revised for a smoother driving experience.
Subaru is offering an optional Performance Package for the WRX Premium trim which includes Recaro eight-way power seats, red brake calipers, upgraded brake pads and 18-inch wheels with a new double-spoke design.
Meanwhile, the 2018 WRX STI is powered by a 2.5-liter turbocharged BOXER engine that delivers 305 horsepower. The Multi-Mode Driver Controlled Center Differential (DCCD) symmetrical all-wheel drive system now comes with electronic control for a quicker and smoother response. Other notable improvements include revised suspension tuning, new brake pads, yellow-painted brake calipers with monoblock six-piston calipers in the front and monoblock two-piston calipers in the rear and larger rotors for better heat dissipation.
The 2018 WRX also comes with Recaro seats and 19-inch alloy wheels with a striking Y-shaped design that translate to a more aggressive stance.
