Amanda Knox Trial Latest News: Lawyers Threaten to Sue BBC for 'Face of an Angel' Movie
A new movie entitled The Face of an Angel, based on the book Angel Face, focuses on the murder case of British exchange student, Meredith Kercher. However, Amanda Knox's lawyers are arguing that Michael Winterbottom's movie starring Cara Delevingne and Kate Beckinsale is "damaging to her image" and unfairly indicates that Knox is guilty of the murder.
Knox's defense lawyers have threatened to sue the BBC for moral damages, as they argue the movie could affect opinion of their client as she prepares for her appeal against her conviction.
In 2007, Amanda Knox was accused of killing Meredith Kercher, then 21 years old, an English university exchange student from Coulsdon, London. Kercher was found dead in her bedroom with signs of a break-in apparent in their shared apartment. Amanda Knox was the one who raised the alarm that there had been an aparrent burglary the morning after the killing.
Knox was initially found guilty after a controversial trial with various inconsistencies and leaks to the media in the lead up and during the trial. She was sentenced to prison but was later released in October 2011 after her appeal was successful when judges concluded that there was a "material non existence of evidence".
However, prosecutors remained relentless, and they managed to get a re-trial orders, and in January 30, 2014, Knox was again found guilty, although this time she was already back in the United States, and she has said she has no trust in the Italian justice system following her controversial trials, and she has no plans to return to Italy.
Knox's lawyer, Luciano Ghirga, said in an interview, "There have already been at least two films and 12 books about the case. If the film is based even loosely on the murder in Perugia and if it is damaging to Amanda's image, we will be asking for damages, as we have done in other cases."
Winterbottom has been keen to add that the film centers on Meredith's life rather than Knox's."The Kercher family had talked a lot about that, with a huge amount of dignity," he said.
"The reasons they went to the trial was to make sure that amongst the chaos, it was remembered that someone had lost their life. That was one of the central things I thought about, he added.
Knox's lawyers are currently working on their appeal in the hopes of getting the guilty decision once again overturned.
