'American Horror Story' season 6 release date, spoilers & cast news 2016: Sarah Paulson confirms return; FX CEO says some teasers are 'misdirects'

Emmy-nominated "American Horror Story" ("AHS") star Sarah Paulson has confirmed that she will be back for the series' upcoming season 6.

Paulson announced her return to "American Horror Story" on Tuesday, Aug. 9, at the Television Critics Association's (TCA) summer press tour. The "AHS" vet joins a top-secret season 6 ensemble that also includes Cheyenne Jackson, who confirmed his return in June, and Lady Gaga, who revealed her participation in season 6 way back in March. In February, Angela Bassett announced her return in "American Horror Story" season 6 during an interview with Larry King.

Apart from her return to the FX horror anthology, Paulson, who is nominated for an Emmy for her portrayal of Marcia Clark in last season's "The People v. O.J. Simpson," did not provide details about her season 6 role.

Meanwhile, though the "American Horror Story" season 6 premiere is just over a month away, the highly anticipated theme for the anthology's new chapter remains a closely guarded mystery.

And it looks like fans of the series won't be finding out the upcoming season's theme anytime soon.

Prior to Paulson's announcement, FX Networks CEO John Landgraf spoke about the secret season 6 premise, saying that the "AHS" team is laying out "misdirects" in a bid to keep the theme under wraps.

Speaking with the press at the TCA summer press tour, Landgraf said, "Every year, we lay out the themes and the new genre [co-creator] Ryan [Murphy] is going to be approaching; we thought it'd be fun [this year] to keep it a mystery — so we are."

According to the FX boss, "There are many more trailers than you've actually seen for hypothetical seasons of 'American Horror Story' — different genres, different places."

"One of them is accurate; the others are all misdirects," he added.

"American Horror Story" season 6 premieres on Wednesday, Sept. 14, at 10 p.m. ET on FX.
