'American Horror Story' season 6 spoilers: Big 'Roanoke' twist revealed; Taissa Farmiga returning
After teasing a major twist that would change everything, "American Horror Story" season 6 aired its sixth episode on Wednesday and delivered just that.
In a stunning turn of events, it was revealed that the reality show "My Roanoke Nightmare" had become a success, surpassing the ratings of even "The Walking Dead" and "Empire." As such, producer Sidney (Cheyenne Jackson) pitched the network a "Big Brother"-type reality series titled "Roanoke: 3 Days in Hell," which would have both the "Roanoke Nightmare" actors and their real-life counterparts living together in the haunted house.
Shelby (Lily Rabe), Matt (Andre Holland), and Lee (Adina Porter) were sent to the house with the actors who played them — Audrey (Sarah Paulson), Dominic (Cuba Goofing, Jr.), and Monet (Angela Bassett), respectively — along with the other actors who appeared in "My Roanoke Nightmare," including Agnes (Kathy Bates), who played The Butcher, and Rory (Evan Peters), who played the ghost of Edward Philippe Mott.
It was also revealed that after "Nightmare" aired, Shelby and Matt's marriage began to crumble and she had an affair with Dominic, who played Matt in the reality series. Audrey, who played Shelby, was in fact married to Rory. Agnes skyrocketed to fame after playing The Butcher but later had a massive breakdown and was diagnosed with schizophrenia. Lee, who was suspected of murdering her real-life husband, agreed to appear in "3 Days in Hell" to clear her name. Her reality series counterpart, Monet, is revealed to have been in and out of rehab.
The castmates were left in the haunted house and they soon realized that what was depicted on "My Roanoke Nightmare" was true. According to a title card, over the next three days, all but one of the castmates died under mysterious circumstances. In addition, "Return to Roanoke: 3 Days in Hell" never aired. What "American Horror Story" season 6 viewers are watching is the assembled footage found after the production went awry.
"It's a radical twist, a completely new form of storytelling," "American Horror Story" co-creator Ryan Murphy told E! News about the episode.
Murphy also revealed that "AHS" alum Taissa Farming is coming back this season. "We're very excited — she's a part of our world and always will be, and I always wanted her to come back," Murphy said.
The "AHS" boss also talked about Finn Wittrock's role this season, saying, "[He] is coming back soon, playing his most f—ked-up character of all time."
"American Horror Story" season 6 airs on Wednesday at 10 p.m. EDT on FX.
