Android 7.1 latest news & updates: Nexus 6P, Nexus 5X will only get some of the features
As confirmed last October, Google's new line of smartphones has dropped the Nexus name and is now known as Google Pixel, along with a Pixel XL variant. As its new flagship phone, Google is understandably working hard on ensuring that its new Pixel phones are on par with the raised standards set by fans and aficionados alike.
To be fair, the new Google Pixel was unveiled with mostly positive praises. Some dub the new handsets as the best smartphones so far in 2016. Most of all, it is highly sought because it carries a unique Android Nougat version that is not found in any other Android device — even those that are currently updated.
This is the case for previous Google phone models Nexus 6P and Nexus 5X. Despite receiving the Android Nougat update, users may notice that the Nougat version in these phones is not exactly loaded with the same features that are sported in the new Google Pixel phone.
The Android 7.1 update is supposed to bring in the Nougat operating system (OS) to Nexus 6P and 5X phones. However, users report that even after the update, their handsets still lack the night mode and the fingerprint gestures features that are present in Google Pixel.
Google's defense is that these features need a certain hardware drive that is not present in the previous Google phone models. Many users, however, felt that the incomplete update is just part of Google's marketing tactic to prompt people to purchase the new Pixel phones instead.
Nevertheless, Pixel phones are guaranteed to get Android OS updates until two years after release. Google also assured their users that security updates will still be issued for at least three years.
The new Pixel phones are lauded for having 4K display support, unlimited storage for photos and videos (even 4K videos), and a superb overall performance.
