'Ant-Man and the Wasp' release date, news and updates: 'Winter Soldier' villain Arnim Zola appears in 'Ant-Man'?
"Ant-Man" gave audiences a first look at the early days of S.H.I.E.L.D., and it saw an appearance from a much younger Hank Pym (Michael Douglas), an older Howard Stark (John Slattery) and Peggy Carter (Hayley Atwell). What fans don't know is that the scene was also supposed to include "Captain America: Winter Soldier" villain Arnim Zola (Toby Jones).
In leaked concept art from the movie, it was revealed that "Ant-Man" was supposed to have Zola appearing in his classic look from the comics with his face projected on a robot body. Multiple designs were made for Zola, and it included the classic look with the face on the chest and a camera mounted on the head, as well as much creepier designs with Zola's face in a box being lugged around by a robotic mannequin in a trenchcoat.
The opening scene was also said to have included one of the main protagonists in "Winter Soldier," Alexander Pierce (Robert Redford). Though these ideas ended up in the cutting room floor, fans are always interested to know what could have been.
As for the sequel, fans have been wondering who Scott Lang (Paul Rudd) could go up against next. Movie Pilot guesses that the villain for the sequel could turn out to be Hank Pym himself. In the movie, Pym tells Lang that the suit "took a toll" on him, and it could be possible that he means the suit has given him psychological damage.
In the comics, Pym was already considered to be an emotionally unstable man, even physically assaulting his wife Janet, the original Wasp. With Marvel being criticized for having a problem with writing its villains, Hank Pym could be the villain that would definitely raise the stakes for Scott Lang — but then again, "Ant-Man" is known for its comedy, and seeing a mentor-turned-villain could be quite dark for a Marvel movie.
"Ant-Man and the Wasp" is set for release on July 6, 2018.
