'Aquaman' release date, news, and updates: Willem Dafoe says 'Justice League' character Vulko returns in 'Aquaman'
Comic book movie fans can best remember Willem Dafoe for playing "Spider-Man" villain Norman Osborn in the Sam Raimi "Spider-Man" movies, but he is now shifting over to DC and he will be playing "Aquaman" supporting character Nuidis Vulko. The character is set to be introduced in the upcoming "Justice League" movie, but Dafoe confirms that he will be brought back for the solo "Aquaman" film.
In an interview with Guardian, Dafoe talks about the differences of the productions of "Justice League" and "Aquaman." He says, "Well, 'Justice League' is very particular because it's an ensemble movie and my character is being introduced here in order to be a principal role in 'Aquaman.' These films are a different experience. They have different responsibilities, different resources and different intentions. It's nice to go between those worlds if you can. They serve different impulses."
Vulko in the comics is one of the scientific advisors of Arthur Curry aka Aquaman and he has grown to be one of Aquaman's most respected allies over the years. Though usually portrayed as a balding overweight man in the comics, the movie version is said to be overhauling the character.
According to Collider, Dafoe's Vulko will be a scruffy-looking man with long, silver hair. Costume designer Michael Wilkinson also says that the character will sport armor that will differentiate his generation from the current king of Atlantis. While Aquaman's armor is gleaming and covered with gold, Vulko's garb will be intricately laced with silver that has weathered over time.
The site also mentions that Vulko has been an occasional villain for Aquaman in the comics. Knowing that Dafoe is usually known for his more villainous roles, should fans expect an eventual betrayal from one of Aquaman's oldest allies?
The solo "Aquaman" movie is set for release on July 27, 2018.
