'Attack on Titan' season 2 release date, news: season 2 to premiere on April 2017
The wait is over. Eren Yeager, Mikasa Ackerman and Armin Arlert are coming back to the small screen next year. After a number of delays, the second season of "Attack on Titan" has finally been confirmed to air on April 2017. Kodansha announced the return of the anime series by featuring a special wraparound jacket on the manga's 21st volume. Comicbook.com has also reported that Funimation has acquired the rights to air the anime series in North America.
"'Attack on Titan' became an instant hit since it first streamed in 2013 and we are thrilled to bring fans the long-awaited Season 2 of the series," Funimation founder and CEO Gen Fukunaga stated.
"'Attack on Titan' is one of those rare titles that has reached true cult status with anime fans. It's been more than 3 years since the last episode of 'Attack on Titan' Season 1 and passion from its fans has not waned. We look forward to premiering it on FunimationNow," Funimation COO Mike DuBoise said.
The manga series has become an international sensation since the 25-episode first season of the anime adaptation ended back in 2014. "Attack on Titan" has also been adapted into a live-action film that was split into two parts. A live-action miniseries has also been released. Furthermore, the original manga has spawned several spin-off manga series, light novels and video games.
IGN has reported that Masashi Koizuka will replace Tetsuro Araki as director in the second season. Araki will stay on as chief director.
The second season was supposed to come out this year, but reports note it was delayed to allow the manga to move further ahead. Unlike other anime series, "Attack on Titan" has stayed as loyal as possible to its source material. So, instead of making up random story arcs or filler episodes, the people behind the anime series opted to wait.
