'Attack on Titan' season 2 news 2016: New season won't follow S1 storyline; series characters in 'Puzzle Monster Quest'

After nearly three years of waiting for news about the future of the "Attack on Titan" anime, fans of the popular series finally have confirmation that there will, indeed, be a season 2.

However, apart from the fact that the long-rumored season 2 has now been officially announced, not much else is known about the upcoming season of "Attack on Titan." Nonetheless, sources claim that the new season will be disconnected from the season 1 storyline and that it will feature some new and highly intimidating Titans.

According to Game n Guide the new season, which is reportedly already in production, might be based on the "Clash of the Titans" and the "Uprising Arcs" chapters of the "Attack on Titan" manga. While most anime series feature storylines that stretch over the course of several seasons, Kodansha has reportedly decided to give season 2 a completely different storyline, perhaps in a bid to prevent more delays in production.

As fans of "Attack on Titan" know, production on the anime had been delayed multiple times because its makers wanted the manga to get several story arcs ahead of the anime adaptation. Having "Attack on Titan" season 2 diverge from the season 1 storyline may have remedied this problem.

Apart from the rumor that season 2 will not be a sequel to season 1, there are also reports that season 2 could deal with the backstory of "Attack on Titan" and explain how the world that exists beyond the protective walls shielding the humans from the Titans came to be.

Kodansha has also reportedly decided to give the new season a whole new set of characters.

Meanwhile, several "Attack on Titan" characters are included in "Puzzle Monster Quest," the new mobile game from the "Puzzle Quest" franchise. Captain Levi, Eren Jaeger, and Mikasa Ackerman all appear in the game, along with monsters and "Attack on Titan"-themed dungeons.

Touch Arcade reports that the game, which is available for both iOS and Android, is out of soft launch but it might take a while before it becomes available in some iTunes regions.
