In a schedule released by 20th Century Fox, "Avatar 2" is slated for a Christmas 2018 release. However, it turns out that this is still subject to change.

Sigourney Weaver, who will be back as Grace in the sequel, revealed in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter that this release date is not solid yet.

"We haven't started it, so I don't know how realistic that date is, but I think it's going to be very exciting," the actress said while promoting her film, "A Monster Calls."

"I've read three of the four sequel's scripts, and they're even more extraordinary than the first one," she went on to say about the "Avatar" films.

Director James Cameron has also hinted in the past that the release date for "Avatar 2" could also be pushed back if necessary. In an interview with Variety, Cameron said of the current Christmas release date for "Avatar 2": "We haven't moved that target yet, but we will if we need to. The important thing for me is not when the first one comes out but the cadence of the release pattern."

"I want them to be released as close together as possible. If it's an annual appointment to show up at Christmas, I want to make sure that we're able to fulfill on that promise," he went on to say.

Cameron is working not only on "Avatar 2" but also the three follow-ups to the film. They are all simultaneously in development so that the director can make sure they are cohesive.

The filmmaker has also said that they are pushing to film the "Avatar" films in high dynamic range and frame rates to make for a no-3D glasses experience.

"Avatar 2" will follow Sully (Sam Worthington) and Neytiri (Zoe Saldana) as they start a family and deal with the dangers and problems of doing so in Pandora.
