'Avengers: Infinity War' release date and news: Hugo Weaving talks about his role as the Red Skull
The last time fans saw Hugo Weaving as the Red Skull, he was destroyed or perhaps transported to space by the Tesseract in "Captain America: The First Avenger." A lot of people were expecting him to return at some point but so far, that hasn't happened. Weaving commented on possibly returning to play the Red Skull and how he felt when he took on the role of the HYDRA leader.
In an interview with Yahoo Movies, Weaving talked about the character and how he was the classic uber-Nazi who thought Hitler was a coward. He said, "It was fun to play; I enjoyed the outrageousness of the German accent that I employed and I enjoyed the extraordinary mask and costume, even though it was unbelievably hot inside it. I enjoy mask work; I enjoy trying to animate masks and reveal certain things that the mask itself might not reveal."
Weaving also wore a mask when he portrayed V in "V for Vendetta." And though that mask wasn't as animated as his Red Skull prosthetics, a lot of fans loved him in the role.
When asked about possibly returning to the Marvel Universe, Weaving said, "With Marvel, it's pretty basic stuff: accept the deal and enjoy the ride. It's not a major stretch for an actor, but on the other hand the difficulty with the Marvel universe is maintaining a link to a human dimension within such an extraordinary, technological CGI universe."
He also said that as of now, he doesn't know what Marvel is planning for the Red Skull. Seeing that he is one of Captain America's (Chris Evans) greatest foes, it would make sense for the leader of HYDRA to return.
A report by Collider in 2012 said that Weaving was originally reluctant to return to the role, but as of now, he has been more open to returning to the franchise.
Weaving already had numerous iconic roles in cinema. Aside from playing the Red Skull and V, he has also played Agent Smith from the "Matrix" trilogy and Lord Elrond from the "The Lord of the Rings" and "The Hobbit" movies. Can he possibly return for "The Avengers: Infinity War?"
"The Avengers: Infinity War" comes out on May 4, 2018.
