'Avengers Infinity War' Release Date News: Russo Brothers Take Director's Chair from Joss Whedon

MARVEL

The Russo brothers are set to occupy the directors' chairs for Disney-Marvel's "Avengers Infinity War" Parts 1 and 2, the sequels to "Avengers: Age of Ultron," which will hit the big screen in May 2018 and May 2019, respectively.

Joe and Anthony Russo will direct both parts of the film, shooting back-to-back in 2016 and 2017.

The Russo brothers will be replacing Joss Whedon, the creative brains behind the 2012 blockbuster flick "Avengers" and the upcoming "Avengers: Age of Ultron," as they take charge of the "Avengers" franchise.

This opportunity allows the brothers to direct four Marvel films, after the dynamic duo directed "Captain America: The Winter Soldier." They were also tasked to direct the upcoming "Captain America: Civil War."

According to Variety, this is the most number of films that Marvel has committed to a single director, or in the brothers' case, a directing team. Whedon directed two "Avengers" movies while Jon Favreau directed two "Iron Man" films.

Because of their very tight schedule, it seems highly unlikely that the Russo brothers will be able to commit to other film projects. At present, the Russos are doing Sony's "The Gray Man."

It looks like the brothers are very in-demand as they are also included in the negotiating table on who will direct the upcoming "Ghostbusters" reboot which will feature Channing Tatum. They recently signed a three-year first-look feature deal with Sony Pictures which will start next month.

"Sony Pictures, where both films are set up, will now have to decide whether to wait for the two or figure out some way to get one of these projects done before 'Avengers Infinity War' starts prepping," Variety said.

The brothers will be directing Disney-Marvel's "Captain America: Civil War," which will feature Sony's friendly neighborhood crawler Spider-Man for the first time in a Marvel movie. The appearance of Spider-Man is part of the Feb. 9 deal between Sony and Marvel.

The Russos are repped by WME and Jackoway Tyerman.

"Avengers: Age of Ultron" will be shown in theaters on May 1.
