'Bates Motel' season 5 spoilers, plot news: Dylan Massett's funny side and the unexpected explored

Fans of the horror television series "Bates Motel" cannot wait to see what the show would bring for its upcoming run. The showrunners, Kerry Ehrin and Carlton Cuse, have teased that "Bates Motel" season 5 will have something unexpected in store for its fervent viewers.

In an interview with Yahoo!, Cuse hinted at things to come which he said viewers "will not see coming."

Ehrin added, "We are really excited about it, and it is going to be a wild ride."

The show's audience have been worried about the shocking development in the last season where Norma (Vera Farmiga) did not just die, but also remained that way. A lot of questions surfaced as to how the show could go on with Norma dead. It was explained by the showrunners earlier though that Norma will still constitute a very important part of the show in season 5, albeit with a slight difference in her character.

Since she is no longer alive to exert her control over her son Norman (Freddie Highmore), she will continue to exist in the deepest recesses of Norman's mind. This means she will still be pretty much in a position to guide her son.

Norman is also said to be really turning into a "psycho" in "Bates Motel" season 5, in reference to the film to which the series serves as a prequel.

On the other hand, reports also say that it will not be an entirely grim new season. Cuse and Ehrin hope to lighten the mood of the show by injecting humor and comic relief through the character Dylan Massett, played by Max Thieriot.

The showrunners said that it is sometimes necessary in television to play to the strengths of the actors and avoid those which they do not do well, something they call "protectively" writing for the cast. They admit though that all the members of the show's cast are capable of really good drama as well as being funny.

As for Dylan, Cuse said, "I think we've never actually fully seen the comic potential of Max Thieriot's character."

Since Dylan has not so far shown his funny side in the story, the viewers of the show can expect him to show this side of him in the upcoming installment.

Lacking confirmation from A&E Network on the specific premiere date, "Bates Motel" season 5 is said to return sometime in March 2017.
