'Bates Motel' season 5 spoilers, plot news: Rihanna cast as Marion Crane; EPs confirm season 5 as the show's last
"Bates Motel" season 5 is aiming for the ultimate "Psycho" thrill by featuring the iconic shower scene of Marion Crane. This was announced by the show's creators at San Diego Comic-Con on Saturday, July 23.
The surprising part of the news is the one who will be portraying the character, revealed to be Rihanna. Apparently, this had been planned all along right from season 1 of "Bates Motel." Although she was not part of the panel present at Comic-Con, Rihanna herself made the announcement through a video shown at the event.
Carlton Cuse and Kerry Ehrin, the executive producers for the show, revealed why they picked the "Umbrella" singer to portray the role which had been unforgettably played by Janet Leigh in the 1960 Alfred Hitchcock horror film.
The EPs were quoted by Clevver News as saying: "We wanted to thrust the iconic role into a contemporary spotlight and redefine it in a meaningful and exciting new way."
The pair also happened to be fans of Rihanna, while the singer herself admitted to being a fan of "Bates Motel." Cuse and Ehrin described the casting choice as "the perfect collision of creativity and fate."
It is seen as somehow appropriate that the scene will be recreated in a modern context during the last run of the series. The "Psycho" prequel spin-off will have just one more run, as the producers announced at Comic-Con.
This announcement was also shared on the show's official Twitter page, saying: "It's official, the #BatesMotel will close after Season 5#SDCC."
It was only a confirmation of what fans and viewers of "Bates Motel" had already foreseen. The death of one of its main characters, Norma Bates (Vera Farmiga), in the last episodes of "Bates Motel" season 4 had been very telling.
Even so, despite Norma's death, she will continue to be a central part of the show as it goes into its last installment. Although she is no longer alive as far as the audience is concerned, she will be very much so in Norman's (Freddie Highmore) mind, guiding him on as always.
With Norman going into full psycho mode in the upcoming season, he will be as close as possible to the version of his character in the movie, but the end will be very much as Norman of "Bates Motel."
"Bates Motel" season 5 is expected to premiere sometime in 2017.
