"Bates Motel" season 4 may have ended with Norma Bates (Vera Farmiga) dying, but she definitely is not dead in Norman's (Freddie Highmore) full-blown psycho mind. The gruesome ending ensures that the next season will be just as surprising, horrifying, and possibly even more enjoyable than the previous, now that Norman is undeniably "psycho-wacko" insane.

The ending had been surprising not because of Norma's death, as anyone watching who is acquainted with the "Psycho" roots of the "Bates Motel" storyline knows Norma ends up dead but immortalized in the deepest reaches of Norman's brain. What was astonishing was that her death came before the show's final season, which is still upcoming. The reason for this was explained by the show's executive producers, Kerry Ehrin and Carlton Cuse.

Cuse shared with TV Line that he and Ehrin had wanted to do their own "version" of "Psycho lore" even though it meant some details would be at odds with the original.

The co-EP pointed out, "It would be boring to just recreate Psycho."

Ehrin added, "The obsessive love of Norma is what the show is going to be based on. It's the heart of what drives it."

Norma is going to dominate "Bates Motel" season 5, as the EPs hinted. She might be dead, but her role has never been more important.

"She's existing now in Norman's brain. In the original "Psycho" you don't really know anything about Norma Bates," Cuse expanded. "You just know that she's a corpse, and you imagine that she was this shrew of a woman who berated her son into becoming crazy. But we re-imagined their relationship as this complex, intense, co-dependent love story."

Their relationship, he said, goes in in season 5, but since Norma's dead, the relationship takes on a different dimension. But despite that, the story does not end there.

In the meantime, "Bates Motel" star Highmore also had his say on Norma's death.

Highmore said that, "Psycho" lore aside, Norma had to die because it was an appropriate ending to the relationship between mother and son.

Highmore shared, "They're both just so broken and at their lowest point that he's going to do what he believes is right. It's a last act of love for the two of them."

The star also explained that the upcoming season will be highlighting another side to his character.

He said, "As long as we know what's guiding Norman, what's going on deep inside, then we can't help but feel for him because, in the end, he's just a boy who wants his mother."

As to the fate of Dr. Edwards (Damon Gupton), now that Norman was truly pscyho, Ehrin revealed that they would have wanted to bring Edwards back for the next season but felt that it would be a difficult "balancing" act. The co-executive producer went on to say that Edwards was not likely to be fooled for long by Norman. Thus, it seems that Dr. Edwards may not be back for "Bates Motel" season 5 after all.
