'Better Call Saul' season 3 news: It's only a matter of time before Bryan Cranston helms an episode for the 'Breaking Bad' spinoff

Talks of Bryan Cranston eventually popping in "Better Call Saul" has been going on for quite a while now. After all, the show is a direct prequel spinoff to "Breaking Bad" to which the actor played anti-hero Walter White. Narrative-wise, it would be an interesting angle to look into should Jimmy (Bob Odenkirk) actually cross paths with the meth maker in his pre-Saul years or maybe even during the years when he is just developing his upcoming persona. However, it appears that chances are more likely that the Academy Award-nominated actor will be tapped to work on a different kind of job should he finally board the project.

As it turns out, Cranston is more poised to direct an episode of "Breaking Bad" instead of appearing in front of the camera to reprise his career-defining role thus far. Co-creator of the "Breaking Bad" lore, Vince Gilligan, spills in a recent sit-down interview with Digital Trends that they would love to have the actor on-set, the only caveat at this point is in terms of scheduling.

"We would love to have Bryan direct, and I think he'd love to direct one. He wants to — it's just a matter of fitting it into his schedule. Now that James Brown has passed on, Bryan Cranston is the hardest working man in show business," the writer said.

It can be remembered that earlier this year, the 60-year-old confessed that he was offered to helm an installment of "Better Call Saul." And while he says that he will pretty much do anything Gilligan asks of him given that he owes his career take-off to him, he admits to being a bit apprehensive about the idea of being part of the show's production. His main reason is because he really does not want to be spoiled on the future arc of the series, which he is a big fan of.

Still, it seems like Cranston could not keep himself away from the AMC program as Gilligan also recently reveals that the "Trumbo" actor actually just visited their set in New Mexico.

"He visited the set recently, which was wonderful. I was directing the first couple of episodes of season three, and within the last few weeks, Bryan came to Albuquerque and visited the set because he was in town to do press for his autobiography [A Life in Parts] — which, by the way, is a great book," he furthered.

No official return date has been set for "Better Call Saul" season 3 but fans can expect it to return with brand-new episodes sometime next year.
