'Better Call Saul' season 3 news: New season's premiere date announced; Giancarlo Esposito speaks on reprising Gustavo Fring role
AMC has finally revealed the official premiere date for "Better Call Saul" season 3.
Jimmy McGill's (Bob Odenkirk) journey to becoming the flamboyant lawyer Saul Goodman will continue on Monday, April 10. The show's release was announced over the weekend at the Television Critics Association (TCA) winter press tour. Season 3 picks up with the repercussions of Chuck's (Michael McKean) actions, testing Kim (Rhea Seehorn) and Jimmy's skills as fledgling lawyers. Meanwhile, Mike (Jonathan Banks) will be searching for "a mysterious adversary" who knows a little too much about him.
There are speculations that Mike's adversary is none other than "Breaking Bad" villain Gus Fring (Giancarlo Esposito). It was also announced during the press tour that Esposito will reprise his role as the original drama's notorious drug kingpin, who used his fried chicken restaurant, Los Pollos Hermanos, as a front for his operations.
In addition, Gus is known for being Walter White's (Bryan Cranston) most terrifying rival for three seasons of "Breaking Bad." Although Gus was killed off in the original program, "Better Call Saul" is a prequel which explores the life of Walter's lawyer, Saul Goodman, who is also known as Jimmy McGill, therefore Esposito is able to return as Gus.
At the TCA panel, Esposito teased that when Gus makes his TV comeback, he won't be the intimidating big bad fans were used to seeing in the original show. "We're at a time where he's a little more immature than where we left off," he said. "He's still finding his way," the actor added.
Esposito also caught up with AMC, and he further explained how different Gus will be compared to how he handled himself in "Breaking Bad." The actor notes that he still has the "calm that is just unshakable," but he will also show the "more eager" and "fresher" side of his character. "He is still terrifying, there is no doubt about it. ... But I think he has an element of being quietly and smoothly manipulating," Esposito added.
The third season of "Better Call Saul" premieres on Monday, April 10, at 10 p.m. ET on AMC.
