'Black Panther' release date, spoilers: 'The Walking Dead' star Danai Gurira joins cast; Lupita Nyong'o reveals plot details
At Marvel's Comic-Con presentation on Saturday, July 23, Marvel Studios president and "Black Panther" producer Kevin Feige introduced the upcoming film's cast.
While most of the "Black Panther" cast members have been previously confirmed or rumored, the introduction of "The Walking Dead" star Danai Gurira as a character in the film took many by surprise.
According to Feige, Gurira will play the role of Okoye, the leader of an elite Wakandan security group called Dora Milaje.
In the Marvel Comics, the Dora Milaje is a team of Wakandan women who act as the Black Panther's bodyguards.
Gurira, who is also a playwright, wrote the Tony Award-winning play "Eclipsed." She rose to fame in AMC's "The Walking Dead," in which she plays the fierce katana-wielding warrior Michonne.
In "Black Panther," the actress joins Chadwick Boseman (Black Panther/T'Challa), Lupita Nyong'o (Nakia), Michael B. Jordan (Erik Killmonger), and Andy Serkis (Ulysses Klaue). Serkis' Klaue debuted as a Marvel Cinematic Universe villain in "Avengers: Age of Ultron" (2015).
While the rest of the "Black Panther" cast and crew have been silent about the film's details, Nyong'o dropped the first details about the plot during the red carpet press rounds following the Marvel presentation at Comic-Con.
Speaking with a Marvel correspondent, the actress said, "The story of this Black Panther is — what am I allowed to say? — The story is that the Black Panther's leadership is really threatened by two foes who come together, and so Black Panther gets the help of the C.I.A. and the Dora Milaje to try and defeat the enemy."
Collider noted that the two foes Nyong'o mentioned may be Killmonger and Klaue.
During Marvel's Comic-Con presentation, the new logo (pictured above) for "Black Panther" was also unveiled.
"Black Panther" will be helmed by "Creed" (2015) director Ryan Coogler.
The film is slated to hit theaters July 6, 2018.
