'Blade Runner 2049' premiere date, cast news, plot updates: Film's details kept under tight wraps; Dave Bautista, Jared Leto star in mysterious roles
Plot details and characters in the upcoming "Blade Runner" sequel are strictly kept under wraps, and everyone involved in production implemented unusual measures to do so. Meanwhile, former professional wrestler Dave Bautista and "Suicide Squad's" Jared Leto have been cast in mysterious roles for the title.
"Blade Runner 2049" is set to premiere this coming October, and according to the synopsis, the film will kick off 30 years from the events of the original film.
"A new blade runner, LAPD Officer K (Ryan Gosling), unearths a long-buried secret that has the potential to plunge what's left society into chaos. K's discovery leads him on a quest to find Rick Deckard (Harrison Ford), a former LAPD blade runner who has been missing for 30 years," the synopsis read.
One of the cast members, Lennie James, shared with Newsweek what kind of security measures were taken to secure any details about "Blade Runner 2049" from getting leaked.
James said that he was only given parts of the script — 20 pages before his character arrived and 20 pages after he was gone — to read before deciding if he would take on the role, and his copy was only accessible for 36 hours.
"It was on an app thing that I could only open on one device – I couldn't take a screenshot, I couldn't take a photograph, I couldn't save it," James added. The actor also said that extreme security measures were implemented on set to make sure that no details would spread elsewhere.
Meanwhile, Bautista and Leto have been cast in mysterious roles for the "Blade Runner" sequel. Although no details have been spared from Leto's character, Bautista shed what light he could in describing his own.
In response to Collider's question of whether he's wearing prosthetics, he said, "It's very obvious that it's me. It's a very cool role, but I think the film itself is going to be so huge."
"Blade Runner 2049" is slated to premiere on Oct. 6.
