"Brooklyn Nine-Nine" shocked its audiences when it put one of its characters' life on the line during its one-hour midseason finale. Interestingly enough, the unexpected turn of events turned out to be a rather tragic punch line to a seemingly innocent joke.

Speaking with Entertainment Weekly after the back-to-back episodes, executive producer Dan Goor said, "We wrote a joke for Gina, in which she tells Charles that she'd rather get hit by a bus than receive another text from him."

True enough, in the final few seconds of the midseason finale, Nine-Nine's wisecracking civilian administrator, Gina Linetti (Chelsea Peretti), got hit by a bus right after receiving a text message alert from over-texter colleague, Charles Boyle (Joe Lo Truglio). What does this mean to Peretti's character going forward? While she may quite potentially be dead, similar incidents in other shows suggest that she could also possibly be alive and may spend a few episodes in a hospital bed tied up to traction pulleys.

Since it was previously teased that the second half of "Brooklyn Nine-Nine" season 4 will feature a Gina-centric arc, fans are hopeful that the narcissistic scene-stealer survives the accident and eventually pulls through whatever injury this may bring. It will also be interesting to see how this incident will affect the entire Nine-Nine precinct, especially Charles, who may understandably feel some guilt for having sent that text message at the wrong time and place.

Moreover, this accident along with her eventual recover, if at all, could impact Gina's personality and life choices in significant ways. Could the upcoming Gina-centric arc be all about a changed Gina and how Nine-Nine would either warm up to it or help her out of such a phase?

The midseason finale also featured a huge step up in Jake Peralta (Andy Samberg) and Amy Santiago's (Melissa Fumero) relationship, when Jake conceded defeat in their manhunt bet and decided to move into his girlfriend's apartment. Will cohabitation affect their relationship for the better or for the worse?

FOX has yet to announce an official return date for "Brooklyn Nine-Nine" season 4, although speculations suggest either a spring or winter comeback. In the meantime, its timeslot will be filled in by the brand-new Kaitlin Olson starrer sitcom, "The Mick."
