'Brooklyn Nine-Nine' season 4 news: Jimmy Smits guest stars as Amy's dad in Thanksgiving episode
The Thanksgiving episode of "Brooklyn Nine-Nine" season 4 will air on Tuesday, Nov. 22, and will introduce Jimmy Smits as Amy's (Melissa Fumero) dad. Incidentally, Smits, who played Detective Bobby Simone in "NYPD Blue," will be playing a retired cop in the police sitcom.
In the Thanksgiving episode titled "Mr. Santiago," Jake (Adam Samberg) will try his hardest to impress Amy's dad, even going "full Santiago" to make a good impression. Mr. Santiago is said to have a Type-A personality similar to his daughter's, which means that Jake will have a tough time getting the man to like him. Amy will reportedly be hosting a Thanksgiving dinner and Charles (Joe Lo Truglio) will be on turkey duty. Meanwhile, Holt (Andre Braugher) will be helping Pimento (Jason Mantzoukas) cope with the fact that he no longer works for the NYPD.
While Smits is only signed to appear in the Thanksgiving episode, his character, as all other "Brooklyn Nine-Nine" guests, will remain in the sitcom's universe and could reappear somewhere down the line.
In an email to Yahoo! TV, "Brooklyn Nine-Nine" co-creator Dan Goor revealed that Smits' casting came about after Fumero and co-star Stephanie Beatriz ran into the actor at an event "and said he was incredibly funny, nice, and awesome." They then pitched the idea of having Smits come in as Amy's father, which Goor thought was a great idea.
"We immediately broke a story and then asked him to be in it," the "Brooklyn Nine-Nine" boss wrote. "Serendipitously, it turned out he was a fan of the show and he agreed to join us," he added.
Meanwhile, Goor dropped a major hint about the rest of the season in a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly. "In a lot of ways, I think this is going to be the year of Gina [Chelsea Peretti]," he revealed. "We're talking about a late season arc where she potentially loses all of her money and has to try to make all of her money back," he added.
"Brooklyn Nine-Nine" season 4 airs Tuesdays at 8 p.m. EST on Fox.
