Speculations are mounting that "Call of Duty- Black Ops III" is set for release in the Fall of this year following a viral campaign involving the social media app Snapchat.

The campaign kicked off with an update for "Call of Duty: Black Ops II" which brought a series of images to multiplayer levels. In these images, Snapchat QR codes were visible. These codes, often referred to as "Snapchat ghosts," were then scanned by players.

This will lead a user to a Snapchat account associated with the "Call of Duty" name to be added as a friend. From this account one video has been posted so far which showed an eye which appears to be under a hypnotic spell. The video also featured three white stripes which many took to mean that "Call of Duty- Black Ops III" was in the works.

The Snapchat video was subsequently circulated on Twitter by users who saw it on Snapchat. Some pointed out that the stripes could also mean that "Call of Duty: World at War II" is the next game that will be released.

All fingers are pointing towards Treyarch releasing the next game in the franchise. Since "Call of Duty: Black Ops II" was released about three years ago, releasing a new game this year would fit into the three-year development cycle that is followed for the games, Forbes stated.

"Call of Duty: Black Ops II" was released in November 2012. This was followed by "Call of Duty: Ghosts" which was released in 2013 from Infinity Ward. What followed next is "Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare" from Sledgehammer in 2014.

The "Black Ops" games in the franchise have outperformed all others including "Ghosts" and "Advanced Warfare." While many fans had hoped that Activision would be releasing "Call of Duty: World at War II" from Treyarch, it is more likely that the company will instead opt to return to its bestselling "Black Ops" games.
